Sickle Cell: Supporting Children and young people at School

Children and young people living with sickle cell can lead full and active lives. With the right support and understanding, schools can help them stay well, take part in school activities and achieve their full potential.

In less than five minutes, this animation provides school staff with a practical introduction to sickle cell and the support children and young people may need at school.

The video covers:

  • What sickle cell is and how it affects the body
  • Signs of a painful crisis and other serious symptoms
  • Why drinking water and keeping warm are important
  • Support during PE, swimming, school trips and exams
  • When to get urgent medical help
  • How schools can help pupils feel safe, included and supported

We encourage all teachers, teaching assistants, pastoral staff and school leaders to watch this animation and use it alongside the pupil’s individual healthcare plan.

With special thanks to Renzo, Gabriella, Isabella and the volunteers who narrated the video and live with sickle cell every day
