Priapism
Some boys with sickle cell can get a painful swelling of the penis. This is called priapism. It can sometimes get better on its own, and things like drinking water, having a warm bath, going to the toilet, or gentle walking may help. It can feel embarrassing to talk about, but it is a common problem for some boys and young men with sickle cell, and doctors and nurses are used to helping with it. If it lasts for a long time or is very painful, it is important to tell an adult and get help from a doctor or nurse. Watch this video to learn what priapism is, why it happens, and what you can do if it occurs.
